What to expect

Here's what THRIVE actually looks like for your student.

01

A weekly conversation

Your student meets with a trained mentor — a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) — for a few minutes each week, either as part of a small group or one-on-one. The topics vary: how the week went, what's going well, what's stressful, what they need.

02

A steady, familiar face

The same mentor meets with your student throughout the year. Over time, they build a real relationship — which means when something is off, your student is more likely to say something.

03

Early notice, not surprises

If we notice attendance slipping, a grade sliding, or something personal weighing on your student, you'll hear from us. Not after a crisis — before one.

04

Connections to real help

When your student needs support beyond what a check-in can offer — tutoring, a school counselor, a community resource — we make the connection and help make sure it sticks.

What you'll get

Benefits for your family.

Early warning

Problems caught in week 2, not month 2. A slipping grade or missed classes get flagged before they compound.

A trusted mentor

An adult outside the family your student can talk to. Sometimes kids share things with a mentor they wouldn't share with a parent — and that's okay. It's how we help.

Less family stress

You don't have to be the only one watching for warning signs. We're doing it too — so you can focus on being a parent.

Real-life skills

Students build accountability, focus, emotional regulation, and self-advocacy — the skills that matter long after graduation.

Common questions

What parents ask us.

Is THRIVE therapy?

No. THRIVE is not therapy, and mentors are not therapists. If your student needs clinical mental health support, a mentor will help connect you with the right professional resources.

Think of THRIVE more like a caring adult who checks in regularly — someone who notices patterns, listens without judgment, and helps your student navigate school and life.

Will I know what my child says?

You'll be looped in whenever it matters. If a mentor notices something concerning — attendance issues, academic slippage, or personal struggles that need family support — you'll hear from us.

At the same time, we build trust with students by giving them space to talk. Not every conversation gets reported home. Safety concerns, clinical symptoms, and family crises are always escalated to the appropriate people, including you.

Is my student's information private?

Yes. Student data is protected under FERPA and only accessible to authorized THRIVE staff and school personnel involved in your student's support.

You'll receive a separate consent form that explains privacy in detail before your student is enrolled.

How much time does this take?

About 15 minutes per week, folded into the school day. It doesn't add homework, doesn't require driving anywhere, and doesn't take time from your family.

What if my student doesn't want to participate?

THRIVE works best when students are willing. Most students come around after a few sessions once they realize the mentor isn't there to evaluate or discipline them — just to listen and support.

If your student has serious reservations, talk to us. We can adjust how they participate, or in some cases, opt them out entirely.

Is there a cost?

No. There is no out-of-pocket cost for THRIVE — it is provided through the partnership between JD Health & Wellness, Salem-Keizer Public Schools, State Grants and your insurance provider.

How do I sign my student up?

Enroll online here — both student and parent sign digitally. Takes about three minutes. Or contact your student's school counselor to ask about THRIVE at your school.

Your role as a parent.

Talk to your student about THRIVE. Let them know it's not punishment or evaluation — it's support. Reach out anytime you have questions or notice something we should know. And trust the process: small weekly habits compound into real change.
